eJournal Entry No. 4

Being a non-education graduate and currently teaching in a university are reasons why I enrolled in this program. Although I already took an 18-unit Certificate in Professional Education, I feel that there is still more to learn. I must admit that the subject is a challenge to me since my training is more on the chemistry itself but not how chemistry should be taught to learners. Whatever teaching strategy I am applying to my class is the teaching style that I saw and experienced with my previous instructors and professors. Taking this subject allowed me to reflect on the teaching styles and techniques that I should employ for my current and prospective students. Step by step, I think I can improve my teaching style to become more engaging since I am teaching a difficult subject.

The modules and learning resources posted on the course site are very helpful in this type of remote learning setup. However, I must admit that there are topics that I had difficulty in understanding. Those topics were the theories of learning in Module 2. I watch some YouTube videos to reinforce the resources posted in order to digest the topic. Throughout the semester studying the materials provided, I was able to understand that students have various mechanisms to learn a specific topic. And as an instructor, I should give the students with various teaching approaches for their learning and development. I will adopt some of the approaches presented in this module to the subjects I am handling and will be handling in the next semesters. Regarding the writing of lesson plans, I will not use the information so far since I am teaching in a university where we are not required to create lesson plans for the subjects I am handling. Nonetheless, what I have learned in this subject can still be applied in writing learning objectives, planning for the instructional context, and assessment strategies.

Actually, I was off-tracked in the study schedule in the last weeks of the semester due to some personal reasons, but still, I was able to get up and finish all the requirements for the subject. I can say that after this semester, I am not the same instructor I was before enrolling in the course. And I will continue to pursue changes and development, continue to educate the learners, and produce science and technology graduates to catalyze the growth and success of our nation.
